Guthrie Govan , born December 27, 1971 in Chelmsford, Essex, England is a guitarist known for his work with Asia groups (2001-2006), GPS, The Young Punx, The Fellowship, Erotic Cakes, The Aristocrats and Steven Wilson. He is a guitar teacher and works with the British magazine Guitar Techniques, the Academy of Contemporary Music Guildford and the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. He was named Guitarist of the Year by Guitarist magazine in 1993.

Govan starts playing the guitar at the age of three, encouraged by his father, but he mainly learns by ear. At the age of nine he played guitar with his brother Seth Govan on Thames Television in a program called Ace Reports. In high school, he discovers, through older friends, the guitarists 'shredder' of the time.

After high school, he studied literature at Oxford University, leaving a year later to pursue a career in music. At that time (around 1991), he sent mock-ups of his work to Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records. Varney is impressed and offers him a record deal. However, he refuses, explaining that he simply wanted to know if he was good enough.

In 1993, he won Guitarist magazine's 'Guitarist of the Decade' award with his instrumental track 'Wonderful Slippery Thing' (a version that appeared later on his first solo album), the demo of the title earned him a place among the newcomers to several others in the live final, which he then won.
